HOW TO CLEAN A MUSSEL

The choice between fresh or frozen? Fresh means cleaning mussels but it also means a far superior quality and taste because mussels are packed with sea water that make up the delicious broth you'll remember from the days you cooked mussels on the beach in a skottle braai.
It's a straight forward process and cleaning a 5 kilo gram box of mussels for 10 people will take you less than 15 min.

Ordered or planinng on ordering a box from our online store? Needing info on how to store your frsh produce?  See below for storage instructions

Note: this only applies to stock ordered online. I.e unshucked oysters and uncleaned mussels

  1. Oysters & mussels need oxygen – always open box so they can breath.
  2. Remove contents, place in an open container and cover with a damp cloth.
  3. Best before: use within 4 days of the harvest / packed date which can be found on the top of your box.
  4. Do not freeze produce, mussels can only be frozen after cooking!
  5. Do not submerge mussels in water, even during the cooking process. Just simply rinse them under the tap with cold water.
  6. You can draw from the product as you wish within 4 days of the pack date, that way you can enjoy oysters & mussels on more than one occasion.

Note: if you’ve collected cleaned mussels or shucked oysters over the counter in our stores, refigerate immedietly and consume within 24 hours of collection.

    The stock produced from mussels while steaming is sea water and holds all the flavour. Use it!
